I do have a soft spot for this mare after having a nice win on her a few weeks ago but every scenario I can think of points to her getting the gun run behind the leader.
She won’t be the juicy odds she was last start but she is in career best form and I’m happy to have a good crack at her once more knowing she’ll get every chance.

All-up
There are two stone cold morals on tonight’s program; Smoken Up and Restrepo and I’m keen to couple them with my best bet Well Hello Dolly. Below is how I’m playing with $100 total spend.  I’m taking one with all three to salute and another with Well Hello Dolly to run a place as insurance.

Best Roughie

Ubringthedrinks (Race 4 no. 6) ($26)
I’m actually a little bit excited about this one. And here’s why. This guy is easily the quickest beginner off the front line and with every horse drawn inside him prepared to hand up (including Alchemy in my opinion) I can see this guy cruising to the top and either sitting up in search of a soft quarter or handing up if the pressure gets too much. Either way, he is a short-course specialist who should run 1:55 and change from the lead or the trail. Back him each way and hold your breath at the start. You’ll know your fate in under 5 seconds.

Best Quinella

Steam Washed (Race 2 no. 1) & Real Hammer (Race 2 no. 7)
This wager is a little risky but there should be a reasonable reward if things turn out to plan. The theory here is that Real Hammer, who is one of Victoria’s fastest horses off the arm will fly across and find the front with 100m of the start with Steam Washed either holding his back into the first turn (70%) or ending up three pegs at worst (30%). Real Hammer only knows one way so he’ll run them along throughout and given I rate Steam Washed the second best horse in the race I’m confident she’ll finish second at worst, even if she’s buried in the run.

Best Trifectas

Race 8
The draw hasn’t been kind to Sapphire Swayze (10) with two key scratchings inside him here but he is such a natural athlete that I think he’ll overcome any obstacles placed in front of him. Even if he does get strung up in traffic I’m confident he’ll finish no worse than second so here’s how I’m playing with a $100 spend.

Several scratchings here have only further ensured that Charlie Machsheen (2) & Restrepo (8) will finish first and second. Restrepo (8) has benefited big-time from those scratchings but I still think either horse can win. From there it’s a process of elimination to find the horses who can run third & fourth & below is what I’ve come up with.

In search of the hat trick tonight after dominant victories at Mildura at his past two where he has led comfortably and proved too slick for his rivals. He will find this slightly harder but will be running the gate looking for the lead and will be nigh on impossible to run down should he get it.

Amazing Kano (Race 5 no. 9) $4
Wasn’t a factor first up from a spell at Ararat just over two weeks ago when down the track behind Barkers Hall but he has since won a Melton trial in fine style. He gets into this well with the claim for Zac Phillips and if he brings his form from last season here tonight he will take beating.

I’ve isolated three races tonight where we can play pretty hard with the exotics and I’d be very surprised if they don’t turn out to be very fruitful. Handy mare who has been trialling stylishly at Kyabram and Shepparton for her first up run tonight.
She has gate speed, looks like getting an easy lead and she should be too good for her rivals fresh.

Back these on a 1 x 3 basis.

You Bet John (Race 1 no. 7) $7
Had no luck at all last start at Swan Hill after being caught three-deep the trip and wasn’t disgraced behind Downtools. Should get the dream trail behind leader and favourite Star Of Paris and is in with a hope of knocking him off.

Soho Winslet (Race 2 no. 2) $6
Has been run down from the front end at her past couple but she drops in distance and will relish the 800m track. She should get the lead comfortably and with her main rivals drawing poorly she can give them something to chase.

Dabbsey (Race 3 no. 1) $7
Loves these conditions and did run a nice race behind tonight’s favourite Carnley at Kilmore last time when third. He has a 10m jump on that fellow and whether he holds the lead from the pole or sits off the pace he will run well.

Western Connection (Race 4 no. 7) $3
Hit the line nicely behind Flash Of Freedom at Bendigo last start after missing away and having a chequered passage. Think we’ll get better than the $3 I’ve marked her and she has a terrific chance with the cold sit on Wunlastchance.

Roughies
Don’t go crazy with these two but think they will both run cheeky races at odds for trainer Pauline Brodie.

Was winding up late when fourth to My Mums A Star at Gunbower last time and can be dangerous if she can hold a forward spot from the pole.

Quite often with these weekday meetings it’s the second half of the programme which we tend to target but today it’s all about the first three races and a solid crack at the Quad. Below I will outline mini Game Plans for the first three events.

Race 1
Put simply Earl Harbour (7) & Earl Of Charity (10) are travelling much better than their rivals so while it’s always risky playing tight multiples in squaregaiting events, this might be an OK race to do just that. I’m carving this race up as outlined below.

Race 2
The two key runners here are Hector Barbossa (6) & Alta Antonio (8). Hector Barbossa (6) is an SA pacer who was awesome from the death last time & can either lead or sit parked here & still win while Alta Antonio (8) is a talented ex-Kiwi who destroyed easier rivals first up in Oz. Hector Barbossa (6) has the edge at the draw so playing these ways.

I tend to think that Goodtime Veejay (5) will be much too good but he is on debut so we play a little safer in this race. I’m betting like this.

Trialled brilliantly at Shepparton recently to prepare her for this and although drawn widely with pace to her inside her class should tell at the end

Terrific in defeat last time behind Gangster Boy at Swan Hill and from the beaut gate with her main rivals drawing awkwardly this looks her race.

Pembrook Caesar (3) looks a class above her rivals here. She should lead & win at a pretty short quote so I advise playing two tricky Trifectas & hoping some value will make it all worthwhile. I’m playing like this.

Best Quinellas

Race 5
Mustang Mach (Race 5 no. 10) & Jaccka Clive (Race 5 no. 12)
Quite simply these are a pair of Group 1 pacers facing horses who are not in their class. What makes thing seven better is that Jaccka Clive should return to dominating from the top end, as he will be off and looking for the lead or the chair soon after the start, while Mustang Mach is a sit-sprinter by nature who will be charging after him at the knock.

Race 10
Cosmic Under Fire (Race 10 no. 8) & Thats Mister Ali (Race 10 no. 7)
This should be another case of the cream rising to the top.  Cosmic Under Fire has been one of Victoria’s two or three best Claimers all season and simply doesn’t know when to quit while Thats Mister Ali is an M7 who finished third to Saint Flash & Bitobliss soon after beating a better field than this four starts back so they should be running one-two (almost) for sure.

This looks a two-horse race with Prosperous Lombo (2) likely to find the front and class runner Fearless Leader (10) set to make his presence felt late. I reckon they’ll run one-two but I’m playing it safe w/ a couple of savers just in case.

Wary of Kurahaupo Quin & Gurkha in particular though so playing two ways as outlined below.

Race 4
No secret that Restrepo & Charlie Machsheen are among Victoria’s best 4YO pacers or that they’ll dominate this race but how we make money from it is another story altogether. I don’t think there’s much between the two but concede that Restrepo is likely to win. Either Livia Degerolstein (3 pegs) or Dream Verdict (3rd best horse) should run third but anything can run 4th so playing like this.

Our Lilly Maloane (Race 5 no. 8) $10
Sat behind the leader at Mildura to win well five runs ago but she hasn’t had any luck at all since, finishing mid-field or worse at her next four outings. She looks a great chance of securing the gun run behind likely leader McArdles Art and at the odds that will be available she is worthy of a ticket each way.

Lombo Cloud Nine (Race 4 no. 6) ($1.80)
This mare makes things hard on herself as she doesn’t have much gate speed and often does a power of work to get into her races but she has been in great form and this event suits. Two key factors in her favour are the fact that three runners in particular (Peaces Of You, Ruffiano, The Adriatic) all begin quickly and should ensure a fast lead time and that with the small field she’ll have less horses to get past than in many recent runs.

Best Quinellas
Waterslide (Race 6 no. 2) & Cyclades (Race 6 no. 5)
These two are very different pacers but I’m confident they represent the best one-two punch on the programme. The theory is that Waterslide will cross the polemarker soon after the start then either hold the lead with Cyclades sitting quietly in the chair or hand the lead to Cyclades in the hope of out-sprinting him late in the race. There are a few question marks here but that only means better value so take the Quinella plus a range of multiple bets.

Comes off a devastating Yarra Valley success 12 days ago and was terrific in defeat behind Chancellor Cullen at Melton prior so it’s fair to say he is in career-best form for Ross Sugars.
He hasn’t seen the standing start for a while and is ODS but he normally handles the tapes well and would only need to go around safely today to be extremely hard to beat.

Conflict Of Interest (Race 8 no. 2) $2.80.
Capable 4YO who has been doing his recent racing in NSW where he has snared the silver medal at Wagga and Goulburn at his past two in fast time for the sprint trip. He faces a big drop in grade today, draws to be in the firing line throughout and with all due respect to his opposition he really does look a class above them and should be winning.

This bloke has ordinary numbers next to his name but he has been coming off big handicaps of late and will relish the return to the front line, as he goes best in or near the lead. The last time he drew off the front in a race he finished a gallant second to Xanderxav in the Group 3 Coulter Crown at Melton back in April so at the odds today he is worth a gamble.

Didn’t do much at his first run for a month at Melton last time behind the impressive Blucolla Tigerpie but he did run an excellent second to Ronald George at Bendigo prior where he took a trail on Givitaname before finishing off strongly at the end of a 56.6 final half. He is a good beginner as a rule and should he be able to secure a cheap run on the pegs he is capable of surprising at juicy odds.

Good Form Preview - Special Saturday Edition

Mister Zion (Race 5 no. 7) ($3.20)
Horses simply don’t go any better than this guy went in the Kilmore Trotters Cup last start. This is as good a trotting race as we’ll see in Victoria until I Can Doosit turns up next year but this one-time Group 1-winning pacer is Australia’s best squaregaiter and I’ll be smashing him at anything better than flip-of-the-coin odds.

Next Best Bets

Mark Dennis (Race 4 no. 5) ($1.90)
The only issue for this bloke tonight is if Chanels Charm (1) holds the top and makes him work too hard. Put simply, if he finds the front or gets a soft run in the breeze then his class will show out and he too looks a worthwhile bet if you’re getting even money.

Alchemy (Race 8 no. 2) ($3.70)
A fantastic frontrunner, this guy looks very likely to lead from the polemarking draw tonight and based on several excellent recent runs he should win if everything goes to plan. You may have to hold your breath at the start as he can do things wrong but he deserves favouritism regardless and is well worth backing tonight.

Mach Ruler (Race 9 no. 2) ($3)
If you’re prepared to put a line through his ignominious performance on Kilmore Cup day then this bloke’s got everything in his favour here. He was flying prior to that unexplained effort, loves the standing start (11 wins) and looks likely to lead for most of the 2240m trip.

Has been flying of late and was rewarded with a Ballarat victory last start where he ran past the talented Keayang Hanover in a slippery last quarter of 27.7. He is really thriving on the sit and sprint style of racing and with some pace expected early watch for him to be charging at them in the stretch.

Well Hello Dolly (Race 8 no. 8) ($13)
Wasn’t disgraced behind Chancellor Cullen in a strong M0/M1 series before sitting wide the last circuit and battling on well for fifth to Royal Verdict last week. She isn’t suited to that sort of trip and tonight she will get a sweet run on the back of Alchemy and looks a great gamble on a 1 x 3 basis.

Led them up at Yarra Valley last time and was just collared in the shadows of the post by Cullen Regent to run a gallant second at the end of a 58.2 final half. 
That was his second run back from a break so he will be nearing his peak now and with the lead his from the pole expect this bloke to be extremely tough to run down.

Bettor Believe It (Race 3 no. 12) ($2.10)
Resumed from a break here three weeks ago where she ran a game second to the smart Pembrook Caesar after sitting in the breeze for the final circuit. 
She doesn’t draw the best but will be fitter, strikes a very winnable race and should be too good for her opposition with ordinary luck.

Amajorjo (Race 4 no. 7) ($1.60)
Was most impressive winning first up from a spell at Terang 11 days ago where he rated a solid 2:00.2 from the front end and slipped home in 57.6 to win as he liked. 
He is sure to be better for that outing, will be pushing forward from the wide alley and should take a power of beating with a repeat of his first up run.

Maybebaby (Race 6 no. 1) ($3)
Recorded brilliant time to beat The Kingston Flyer at Kilmore three back from this very draw after trailing the speed and using the passing lane to full advantage.
She looks like getting a similar trip tonight on the back of likely leader Zoomba and is sure to be mighty hard to hold out once she sees the sprint lane in the stretch.

Kotare Roland (Race 7 no. 1) ($2.20)
Comes off a C2/C3 series where he ran an excellent second to stable mate Charlie Machsheen in a heat at Geelong before dominating his rivals in the final here two weeks back. 
He faces some stiff opposition tonight but draws to lead and his rivals will have a devil of a time mowing him down the way he went last time.

This girl turned in an absolute ripper on Kilmore Cup Day when leading early from the ace alley before handing the lead to The Kingston Flyer and then easily out-sprinting that guy in a 56.8-second final half. She can either lead or take the trail behind a suitable runner tonight and given The Kingston Flyer once again appeals as her major danger and this time he’ll be giving her a start, anything near flip of the coin seems excellent straight out value.

Turnover (Race 3 no. 10) ($26)
This mare is much more talented than her one win from 34 starts would suggest. Two starts back she was very brave when taking ground off her major rival tonight in Bettor Believe It at this course then ran another top race when steaming home in a 27.6-second final split on Maryborough Cup Day. Even trainer John Justice says she’s flying so get involved on a 1 by 3 basis & you won’t be disappointed.

Amajorjo should find the front with Eleventh Command on his back. They should dominate proceedings from there. Take these two tricks.

This guy will be better for his first up effort at Cobram 9 days ago when third to Our Maylan and he does look nicely suited here as he has a real liking for the standing start conditions. He will either lead or sit just behind the speed and looks a great gamble on an each way basis.

A typically tricky night at Mildura with no real standouts and I think the best way to extract some cash out of the program is via an all-out assault on Race 5 plus a crack at the Quaddie.

There won’t be thousands waiting for us if these bets come off but it should be a nice collect nonetheless. Here’s how I’m playing with $100 total spend on each.

The Money Race - Race 5 

Superstar Xpress (5) ($4.50) comes off a cracking run at Swan Hill last time where he charged home from the rear for a game second to Born Again Sassy. He is a brilliant beginner as a rule and has run some outstanding races from the top end on this track in the past and he should be there tonight.

Another President (1) ($4.50) has been freshened up since winning in brilliant time here a month ago where he enjoyed a beaut trip behind the speed. He should do enough early to maintain the spot behind the leader and with the pace expected to be reasonable once more he’ll take holding out.

Good Form Grampians - Tuesday Trots

Odds-on Punters
 
Things get a little tricky later on tonight but for those who don’t mind taking the short odds then the early part of the programme is for you. Back these straight out, or take them all-up if you’re feeling more bullish.

Minti Choice (Race 1 no. 11) ($1.40)
 
This guy was only placed twice from his ten outings last season but more often than not he mixed it with some smart customers.  He resumed from a break at Yarra Valley last week and ran an excellent third to Cullen Regent where he ran home well at the end of a 58.2 final half.  The draw is not ideal but he is clearly the best horse in the race and should be winning with ordinary luck.

In The Frame Lombo (Race 3 no. 7) $(1.70)
 
Had a reasonable 3YO season and he resumes tonight with Gavin Lang in the sulky off the back of an easy trial success on this circuit just over three weeks ago.  He has blinding gate speed when stoked up and it wouldn’t surprise to see him spear out, get the lead and from there be nigh on impossible to gun down first up.

Value Bets
 
If you are in search of a bit of value then the latter half of tonight’s card looks attractive and I’ve found two to back each way on a 1 x 3 basis that will give you a sight.

Lombo Blu Blood (Race 5 no. 3) ($3)
 
Never a factor at Melton last Friday night from a poor draw but he looks much better suited tonight as he looks certain to get the lead, which is a position he relishes. He can be a little hard to catch but the short course is in his favour and with a lack of any real pressure expect him to be extremely hard to cut down.

Torque Artraction (Race 7 no. 4) ($4)
 
She has been racing in much stronger races than this of late behind quality mares Pembrook Caesar and Our Crime Of Passion and will love the drop in class. She gets the opportunity to race in a forward position tonight, possibly even the lead, and has a great chance at getting back into the winners list.
